Aux courses en province (At the Races in the Country), Edgar Dega 1872, Oil on canvas, 36.5 x 55.9 cm (14 3/8 x 22"), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
In the foreground is the family out to the horse races in the country. In the distance are some farms and the race is going on. The depth in the picture is created by making things that are going to appear to be a far away to be small, blured and out of focus and the artist has used the space to focus on the family and the mother with the little child.
Nighthawks, Edvard Hopper 1942, Oil on canvas, 30 x 60 in, The Art Institute of Chicago.
In this picture is the attention given to the people that sitting down by the bar. The picture is painted in two-point perspective. In the picture are the streets empty but two men and a woman is sitting down by the bar. I get a feeling of emptiness of loneliness when I look at this painting.
Tiger, France Marc 1912, Oil on canvas, 111 x 111.5 cm Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich.
The painting is abstract and there is some dept in the picture but the important thing in this picture is the color. The yellow and black tiger is the centerpiece in this picture. I get a the impression that the tiger is getting out of the jungle, strong and dangerous on hunt for something to eat. The tiger is confident in its strength.
Fighting Forms, France Marc 1914, Oil on canvas, 91 x 131 cm; Staatsgalerie moderner Kunst, Munich
In this painting is the red form that I think symbolize life fighting against the black that I think symbolize death. The red, warm form is winning and it has a lot of others warm colors around it. The colors of life: red, green, orange, purple. The black form is cold with cold colors behind it, blue, blue-white and blue-purple.
Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life), Henri Matisse 1905-06, Oil on canvas, 175 x 241 cm (69 1/8 x 94 7/8 in), Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA
Matisse painted a colorful painting that pays a tribute to life and love. In the center is two woman that appear to bigger than the rest of the people in the painting to emphasize that they are more important. They both have an aura of red and green around them. The picture have a landscape with a horizon and there is depth and space in the picture. I think that this picture is a tribute to the woman and to good love. Matisse loved woman and he loved life. The colors in the picture are warm. Red, pink, green, orange yellow. The colors symbolize life, rebirth, birth and love. A very fine tribute to life. I really like this painting.
